Christine Galavotti
Dr. Christine Galavotti joined the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in January 2018 as a Senior Program Officer, leading the Evidence and Learning Initiative for the Family Planning team. In this role, she oversees multidisciplinary and applied research on drivers of contraceptive access and use, effects of social and gender norms on reproductive decision-making, and improving quality and equity of family planning services and reproductive health outcomes. Prior to joining the Foundation, she was the Senior Director for Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights at CARE USA, where she led the organization’s global SRHR program, and oversaw a team of 30 senior technical advisors, program officers and associates to advance global learning, innovation and impact. Before joining CARE in 2010, Dr. Galavotti spent 22 years at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), where she developed, managed and evaluated social and behavioral interventions to promote reproductive health and HIV prevention in both US and international settings. She is particularly interested in social accountability, community-led intervention, rights-based programming, and implementation science approaches.
She served as Technical Advisor to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s Avahan India AIDS Initiative (2003-2013), was a member of the FP2020 Rights & Empowerment working group (2012-2016), has coauthored more than 60 publications, and regularly serves as a reviewer for scientific journals in her field. She received CDC’s 2001 Award for International Health, the 2004 Award for Excellence in Public Health Training, and the 2009 Award for Excellence in Behavioral and Social Science Research in Public Health. She also received the 2005 Secretary’s Award for Distinguished Service (US Department of Health and Human Services). Christine Galavotti earned her B.A. in English from Amherst College, and her Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin.
